Concerning the first question, how our society separates "aberrations" or those who deviate, there is an article I found online discussing the psychological effect and reasons behind virtually every individual's desire to conform, to fit in, to go along with the crowd. http://www.faqs.org/health/topics/2/Conformity.html
ReplyDeleteHello Mr Ferencz, I was unable to open the article. Sorry for the inconvience
ReplyDeleteFor my Minutes, can I play a song I found? It's called "Comptine d'un autre ete : L'apres midi" by Yann Tiersen. I was listening to it while reading the short story for homework, and I found that it sort of went along with the story somewhat. The problem is, the song is downloaded on my phone and I was wondering if that was okay. If it's not, I can look it up in class.

Oops, I just realized that finding a song is part of our lesson tomorrow. I already have another song in mind for the homework. I hope it's fine if my Gift leads into the lesson.

around the one minute five seconds mark the singer begins to speak sort of in a plea, or a want of mercy. Even the lyrics state that he needs someone to tell him that there is a world outside with all of the awful things that he's made. It is the followed by a nice beat that gets louder and louder, showing the gradual increase in either regret or anger or being high, depending on the listener. Then the lyrics are spoken as if through screams, mentioning things such as drugs and "God can't hear you", as if he believes there is no hope, and doest want everyone else to feel good either.

The first time I listened to this song, it sent chills down my spine. This song created feelings of sorrow, regret, and pain. The vocalist sings of grieving for a person who died. The lyrics speak of separation, grief, and death. She sings about how she wants to die so she can be with the one she loves. The song causes empathy within the listener because the feelings that are conveyed are understandable. When I was listening to this song, I felt like I could understand exactly how she felt. This also helps the listener to understand the slightly morbid side of true love. The song and melody convey the feeling that love can be all consuming and take over our lives-- not always in a good way. There are many songs out there that are about breakup or the bubbly side of love, which is mostly full of good things. However, this song shows us the other side, where love is deeply connected to death and the darker side of people. I love this song because I feel that this song shows the listener a perfect representation of the darker side. This song seems to show the whole world, where there is always a dark side, or a "shadow world".
I'm sorry...I just keep ranting, because I'm not sure how I'm supposed to explain what types of feelings this creates in me because feelings are sort of personal, y'know?
I cried the first time I heard this song, because there is something about it that is different from all the other songs I've listened to...though I can't exactly explain what it is. Maybe it's the sincerity within the words.
So, since I'm completely done ranting now, I really recommend this song if you want to listen to something...good? How are we supposed to describe a song?

ReplyDeleteI chose A Drop In the Ocean by Ron Pope. Since the moment the song begins, it's totally packed with emotion, both from the lyrics as well as the instruments. Whenever I listen to this song, I'm immediately affected. It has a sort of meaningful and emotional quality to it. It engages me in the song. When he sings "I'm holding you closer than most, because you are my heaven" I feel the love that is being translated in his voice. He's trying to convey to someone how deep that his love for them is. As I listen to this song, I think about the people that I love and how, in a certain way, they are my heaven. The song is also laced with sorrow. There are certain parts of the song, like when he sings "It's like wishing for rain as I stand in the desert" that make me sort of long for something. I also feel the sorrow that he seems to feel as he sings. All in all, the combination of the instruments and the meaningful lyrics make for an impacting song.
Mr. Ferencz, here is the song I presented as my Gift today during Minutes. It is called "Comptine d'un Autre Ete - L'apres Midi" by a French pianist named Vann Tiersen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFLF-gh4C2M

The songs I chose "are Strobe" and "HR 8938 Cephei"-deadmau5. The beginning of these songs give you a sense of the unknown, empty space, and sadness. Later on, they both start picking up the pace, get exciting, but they have the same overall theme, gloom. The title HR 8938 Cephei is a reference to a star close to the polaris, a cold, unknown, mysterious place.
“Titanium” by David Guetta ft. Sia (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TqA5rN1Gm4Y)
ReplyDeleteWhenever I listen to this song, I am overcome with intense emotions that are suppressed within me and relieved of it; these emotions include anxiety, frustration, jealousy, desire, happiness, passion, and somewhat sorrow. In reference to the song, I feel that this song boosts one’s morale with the music and the lyrics; the music is very upbeat and the lyrics frequently repeat: “I am titanium”, “I’m bulletproof, nothing to lose”, and “I won’t fall”. Meanwhile, in my perspective, it conveys to the obstacles in life and that we must confront those problems ahead of us...it does not hurt to face these problems and attempt to overcome it.
(I hope you enjoy this video :))
Question: Is music/song good literature/poetry? From our previous comments on the song we each chose, we discussed about the emotions experienced as we listened to the song. For instance, Kevin mentions that his song evokes “regret, anger, or being high”, Bowen feels that the song “makes him more energetic”, Alice emphasizes that “the song created feelings of sorrow, regret, and pain”/ “I felt like I could understand exactly how she felt”, Abby points out that the song “conveys deep love…laced with sorrow”, and Ahmet says that the song “gives a sense of unknown, empty space, and sadness”. Also, during our first day of school, Mr. Ferencz presented a question: “What is literature?” and we proposed that literature is a piece of work that expresses an idea and appeals to emotions that we could relate to real life situations. Does music express an idea/ideas? Does it evoke feelings and emotions in which one could relate to? If so, is music considered to be literature? (Anyways, these questions are open to everyone who wants to answer it.)

The song I chose above is called "Somewhere Only We Know" by Keane. The first time I've ever listened to this song was in the trailer for the most recent 'Winnie the Pooh' movie and I immediately fell in love it. On the surface, it is simply a song about a person walking through the woods. If you listen closely, however, it creates the image of a grown up, revisiting his childhood - "I walked across an empty land, I knew the pathway like the back of my hand." The tone of this song, when looking at the figurative meaning of the lyrics, comes across to me as nostalgic and sad, as if the person telling his story cannot get back his childhood; "Is this the place we used to love? Is this the place that I've been dreaming of?" The fact that the singer also addresses the audience by frequently using the word, 'you' and 'we', (for example: "So why don't we go, somewhere only we know.") awakens the strong sentimental emotions of remembering the distant past for many of us.

ReplyDeleteI'm not so sure anyone will know this song, its in Cantonese and the title is "讓我愛你一小時“, directly translated, the title means "Let Me Love You For One Hour". The song doesn't say what they mean directly. By the tone of the song, it is an extremely sad song. It makes you feel as if you are experiencing the pain he is going through by loving a person. The lyrics help by portraying the same matter. The lyrics talk about a man (the singer) who is in love with this girl but she doesn't want to love him back anymore. He is reminiscing the memories he had with his girlfriend. She is in between the two men, and in the end chooses the wrong path, because she ends up being raped by the other guy. The singer is extremely heartbroken because he just wanted to love her and in the end couldn't even protect her. Also, the lyrics talk about how if she could let him love her for on single hour (the title) he would do all these things for her and would immediately leave happily, even if it was only for one hour.

ReplyDeleteSkyscraper - Demi Lovato
This song is about conquering and winning something. It's about rising above the trials that we face in our lives. The beginning sets a depressing mood, with "skies are crying", as rain is often associated with sadness.. This song is almost scary, the way she softly almost talks, not sings. "Catching teardrops in my hand" show how she relates to the rain and its sadness. The high notes Demi hits when she sings 'Skyscraper' in the chorus create the feeling of strength, of shooting towards the sky as skyscrapers do. This song emphasizes the feeling when people break you down to a point where you then feel as if you are powerless. It's an awful feeling and no one deserves to understand that pain. The chorus shows you getting back up, fighting back and showing how strong you can be.

ReplyDelete"Hurt" composed by Thomas Bergensen.
This song is filled to the brim with emotion. On a shallow level, it seems only to be a sad song which simply makes me feel sad and hopeless. However, I think that there is more to it than that. The first thirty seconds or so remind me of a sort of sad prayer. This is the main sad part. However, at 1:05, the music becomes slightly more hopeful and I feel a sort of awe and something else that I can't really describe. Maybe power? At 1:21, It looses almost all of it's sad atmosphere partly because the singer stops "crying" while she sings. From 1:21 to the end it is very hopeful and it becomes almost happy. But not quite. Overall it is still very sad and that is the emotion that I walk away with.

ReplyDeleteThis song is "Mr. Brightside" by The Killers.
The tempo and lyrics of this song creates an air of high energy jealousy, anger, and uncertainty. The lyrics are about a man and a woman, whom he kisses, and then becomes increasing infatuated with her, he says
"It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this?
It was only a kiss
It was only a kiss"
Realizing he is in love with her, even though he shouldn't be, he lies in bed wondering about this girl, and what she is doing with other men.
"Jealousy, turning saints into the sea
Swimming through sick lullabies
Choking on your alibis"
"Jealousy, turning saints into the sea", he realizes that jealousy can turn even defeat someone as pure as a saint. He later becomes so infatuated that he starts going out with the girl against better judgement, "choking on your alibis", he and the girl are in love even though she is with someone else.
"But it's just the price I pay
Destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes
Cause I'm Mr Brightside"
Realizing that he cannot break from this girl, he realizes that cheating is "the price I pay" because he absolutely has to be with this girl.
He "mr. Brightside" because he is eager to look on the bright side of things even though he knows what he is doing is wrong.
The lyrics of the song along with the increase of volume and tempo to augment the speaker's message.

ReplyDeleteCome Wake Me Up by Rascal Flatts
The song begins by describing how the man is normally able to forget "you", the person who the song is about, most probably a girlfriend or wife. After that, he mentions how he misses her presence, and how he's reminiscing about their memories. Until this point, only a piano and vocals are used, and similar to what we experienced in class, the piano creates a despondent atmosphere. Next, in the chorus, he compares fire to love, which is indicated by the lyrics "Tonight your memory burns like a fire", "I just can't put out this love", and "I just sit in these flames and pray that you'll come back". Additionally, the repetition of the phrase "I close my eyes tightly, hold on and hope that I'm dreaming, come wake me up" shows how the vocalist dislikes the reality, and wishes he was dreaming, and wants to be woken up. Overall, the variation of instruments, tempo, and vocal pitch creates a gloomy and heartbreaking mood. Furthermore, the target of the song isn’t mentioned, as many other artists do. Even though I can’t personally relate to the song, I feel that this song can be related to by many who might be in the situation that the singer is depicting.

ReplyDeleteB-e-a-utiful by Megan Nicole
The sound of this song makes it sound like it is just a girl who is seriously crushing on someone with a semi-upbeat, but also sad sound. But when you actually listen to all of the lyrics you realize that the girl is not just crushing after someone, she is jealous of everyone else in a relationship including her friend. In the beginning part of the song and part of the chorus the lyrics are
"She's with him, I'm in the backseat
Know it's not right, but it hurts when they're laughing
I've never been where they are
I wanna be blown away, wanna be swept off my feet
I wanna meet the one who makes it hard for me to breathe
I wanna be lost in love, I wanna be your dream come true
Wanna be scared of how strong I feel for you"
The girl says that she wants to "be lost in love" and she has never been in love like her friend like when she says "I've never been where they are". The girl really wants to be in love with someone and it hurts her to see everyone else around her in love.

ReplyDelete"Grasshopper Song" by Sunny Hill (Kpop)
This song is supposed to contradict the Aesop's fable about the hardworking ant versus the free-going grasshopper. In the fable, the ant gathers food to survive the winter while the grasshopper starves because it didn't. In the song, the ant originally works very hard but is frustrated by his monotonous life. The whole music video switches from a black and white scene of ants working to a colorful scene with grasshoppers partying. The song itself evokes this image by being lively and upbeat. Part of the choreography is when the grasshoppers twist their wrists besides their head, demonstrating the stress that comes from continuous hard work. The lyrics "Ring-a-ring-a-ring" and "I want to laugh while I live" in the chorus are whimsical and catchy, encouraging the listeners to sing along while creating a carefree mood. At the end of the song, the ant realizes that although collecting sugar is important, he needs to have more fun and goes hang out with the grasshoppers.
The song I chose was Iron by Woodkid. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSkb0kDacjs . I chose this song because i like how it makes me feel empowered. If I were to ever go to war, I would want to listen to this song because it gets my adrenaline pumping. ReplyDelete"Chalk Outline" Written by the band Three Days Grace is one of my all time favorite songs. On the surface the tempo and the lyrics of this song create the feeling of sadness and jealousy. But when we look underneath we find a much deeper meaning to the song. As we know from movies a chalk outline is used to indicate where a murder victim once was. The song is broken up in two verses with a chorus which is repeated three times.
The intro verse is slow with him emphasizing key words:
I've been cursed, I've been crossed, I've been beaten by the ones that get me off, I've been cut, I've been opened up, I've been shattered by the ones I thought I loved... Brings a reference to a possible significant other which hurt him repeatedly.
The chorus livens up:
You left me here like a chalk outline (The relationship died and she left him as though he meant nothing to her)
On the sidewalk waiting for the rain to wash away, wash away. (She hopes that the pieces of the relationship would disappear)
You keep coming back to the scene of the crime (They constantly remember what used to be)
But the dead can't speak and there's nothing left to say anyway (She left him speechless, and he would have nothing to say regardless)
All you left behind, is a chalk outline. (There's barely anything left except the outline of the bad memories of the relationship)
The second versus is full of sorrow and gives the feeling of betrayal:
I've been cold in the crypt (He admits do his wrong doings)
But not as the cold as the words across your lips (But not nearly as bad as what she did to him)
You'll be sorry baby some day (You'll regret it)
When you reach across the bed where my body used to lay (Regret how you treated him)
The chorus repeats twice...
The instruments in this song with their intensified feeling and tempo help the lead guitarist's, Barry Stock, message come across.

ReplyDeleteEric Clapton - Tears in Heaven
This song conveys an emotion of sadness through many aspects. The music has a fairly slow tempo, and is generally low in tone. Peaceful instruments are used like the acoustic guitar, hand drums and piano. Eric sings:
Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?
Would you hold my hand
If I saw you in heaven?
Would you help me stand
If I saw you in heaven?
This part shows Eric wondering about his deceased son, making the listener feel sad and sympathize him. He sings with his head slightly bowed and eyes close most the time, with a slow, and slightly low tone, also creating a feeling of despair.

"Under the Water" by The Pretty Reckless
Listening to this song makes me feel the hopelessness that of someone who has lost everything with the words "Broken lines, across my mirror//Show my face, all red and bruised//And though I screamed and I screamed, well no one came running." I believe the "red and bruised face" that is mentioned is what the singer sees inside of her soul. This therefore leads me to believe that the singer feels like she is at her lowest point in life which when listening to this song, I can sympathize with.
The tone of the lyrics and the music brings back the memories of the times of the hard points in my life. However with the words "Don't let the water drag you down," I feel the hope of making my future bright. The word "water" is used often in this song, and although for me, the word symbolizes all the things in life that makes us want to give up fighting, for others, it may have a different meaning. That is what makes this song so relatable to others because by not telling what "water" means, we are able to make our own conclusions.

ReplyDelete"The Fighter" by Gym Class Heroes
This song shows the perseverance and determination that Olympic athlete, John Orozco, has in order to be the best while at the same time showing how you have to overcome obstacles and look past criticism to progress. This song makes me not want to give up and keep trying. I also feel like I can somehow relate to the song.

ReplyDeleteChelsea - by Counting Crows
This song just gives a general feeling of sorrow and regret. The same sad chord is repeated over and over again and the trumpets seem to moan with the singer. He keeps repeating 'maybe things are different these days' like he wishes it were true but knows its not. It also seems really hopeless the way he says 'the light in her eyes goes out' its like she realizes that nothings going to change and all at once, in a single moment, is just taken down by that fact. You find that the reason he can't be in Chelsea is because of what happened there and his regrets 'the things i do to people i love shouldn't be allowed'

ReplyDeleteThis song represents the demons inside humans. No humans are perfect and we all have flaws. The lyrics, "No matter what we breed, we are still made of greed," represents the constant things that humans need. The lyrics, "Your eyes, they shine so bright, I want to save their light," could represent a father trying to protect the innocence of his child before the demons inside take over.

Adam Lambert - Underneath
I thought about this song a lot during class when we were discussing about how we hide things about ourselves because we don't feel comfortable with letting people know every aspect of us. In the first lines of this song Adam sings:
"Strip away the flesh and bone
Look beyond the likes you've known
Everybody wants to talk about a freak
No one wants to dig that deep
Let me take you underneath"
These lines say that people like to talk about what they see on the surface, because they don't care to know what's underneath a person's exterior. Digging any deeper would be outside of both parties' comfort zone.
In the song, it feels as if Adam is letting himself be vulnerable while being strong, and there's a sense of opening up and being completely honest. I think it takes a lot of courage to simply show someone what's underneath, as he admits "Still not that easy for me, underneath"
So, I admire that he is able to do so because he goes on to say "I'm standing here with no apology." His confidence doesn't sound like an arrogant kind of confidence; instead, it implies a deep bond of trust/love between him and whomever he's singing to.
I listen to this song for courage whenever I had to step out of my comfort zones. Because this songs says that it's okay - sometimes it's a relief to stop hiding things ("...a beautiful release").

ReplyDeleteThe piece of music I selected is an old instrumental one that is titled, "Canon in D" and was composed by Johann Pachelbel around the 1680s. Despite its age, it is still listened many times by a tremendous amount of people all over the world. It also one of the most overused works, it is used life's most memorable chapters especially at weddings and graduations. People usually choose this piece because it gives you "the feels", so my friend calls it. When I listen to it, it is usually when I'm doing homework. It is very relaxing and soothing. Pictures of peaceful scenes of nature flow throw my mind as I listen to it and it's not because the video is filled with pictures of nature, but because the way the instruments are intricately playing together in harmony paints a placid atmosphere. It calms me down, allowing me to concentrate better. This song certainly deserves to be a classic and continue to be adored by many.
Two Steps From Hell - Undying Love
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14ZkxaV7fQQ
I chose this song because of the variety of emotions expressed by this fast paced piece. In the beginning, it feels as if you are looking over a city from a skyscraper and then just taking off. It progress to give you a grand feeling which does not die down even after the piece ends. At the last part of the piece, it feels as if there are no ends and they possibilities and thoughts are just limitless. As every song by Two Steps from Hell makes you feel, it makes you feel like the king of the world, which makes me love the music they make. It shows emotion in levels, starting with calmness building into the feeling of greatness. It is truly addicting.
PS: It was nearly impossible to choose just one piece, to a point where I had to ask my parents and friends about them. But, it did take most of my Saturday and even Sunday :P

ReplyDelete"Home" by Phillip Phillips
This song focuses on the safe haven that we can provide for ourselves through both our home (literally) and our friends/family (figuratively). The message within seems to say that we all have a place to go, even through the hardships of life. For example, the lyrics "Just know you're not alone, I'm gonna make this place you're home" show the guidance available when you're feeling down. "If you get lost you can always be found" reminds people that no matter how bad a situation may be, there will always be someone to help you back on your feet.
This song makes me feel relaxed and content, because stress can make you feel unhappy. "Home" reminds you that things always get better (which is usually true) and not to give in to your troubles. (So in other words don't panic that you have 4 hrs of HW to do and 2 tests tomorrow! lol)

ReplyDelete"Almost Lover" by A Fine Frenzy
Based on the lyrics, this song is about the loss of her "almost lover." Even though, the person is gone, she still remembers what happened and it is haunting her, like it says in the bridge ("But so you're gone, and I'm haunted"). Most of the lyrics describe the memories she has with her lover, such as the first verse: "Your fingertips across my skin, the palm trees swaying in the wind, images."
This song makes me feel plenty of sadness, a subtle sense of longing (though for what, I do not know), and pity for the singer. It seems like even after all the pain he has caused her, she still chooses to dwell on the memories that most likely cause her heartache, like she says in the chorus. For me, this song also calms me down when I'm feeling stressed because it reminds me that there are people in a far worse situation than I am in.

ReplyDeleteThe song I chose is Swing Tree by Discovery. This song immediately boosts my mood whenever I listen to it because it's really upbeat. I prefer to listen to this song with headphones or ear buds because I feel I get so much more out of it when it's the only thing I'm focusing on. It makes me want to close my eyes and let my mind wander. Another thing I really like about this song is that it's really hard to decipher the lyrics so until you look it up, it's pretty much left to interpretation. But a main part of the lyrics are:
"If I was a boy at sea
I would be swinging from a broken tree
I would be down on my back looking up at stars at night
and if I could get back to reach to reach the saltiest of evergreens
You know that I would turn back just to fight the whites of iron eyes"
These lyrics remind me of the story "Where the Wild Things Are" because they're both about a boy lost on a sort of adventure. That concept makes the song very relaxing and a temporary mental getaway for me.

ReplyDeleteThe song I choose "I Like Trains". This song raises my mood because at the part where they sing "I like Trains" the music is very playful, and the beat makes people feel happy. There are no speeding up or slowing down in the song, it goes on in at constant pace so someone who is listening feels content as there are no worries brought up.
The song does not contain anything that would cause people worry, fear, sadness...etc. It was meant to be a funny song, with a strange topic and lyrics, with fits in perfectly with the background music with is fast and makes me imagine a train running on rails.

ReplyDelete(Music Box) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnvVZN7EbbY
The song I chose is Itsumo Nando Demo(Always With Me) by Hayao Miyazaki, a song from the movie Spirited Away. This song makes me feel calm and relaxed. The music box version sounds a lot like a lullaby, which is usually sung/played for calming effects. With one main instrument, the song sounds very peaceful. It makes me feel like nothing will disturb me and everything is at peace. The slow pace of the song also adds to the calming and peaceful effect.
