ReplyDeleteSo, don't ask me how, but I happened upon this. I didn't even know AR-wear clothing even existed. There's the question about whether it is up to the women to work to protect themselves against rape. I have contradictory feelings about this, especially because a commenter who has been raped says she would feel safer with these. I just thought this to be interesting to share.
I don't know Mr. Ferencz, I kind of object to book cover that's this week's header image. Because the woman pictured is clearly a very young model (wearing makeup/with plucked eyebrows), and has been photoshopped (the angle her head is at in relation to her neck makes no sense), while Offred is in her 30s and is explicitly not supposed to look like a model wearing makeup, at least not while going about her duties as a Handmaid. Furthermore, this woman is supposed to look like her mouth is sewn shut (which it doesn't actually look like at all, because that would be a gruesome image and this image is far from gruesome, a disconnect which I actually find kind of disturbing), but Offred isn't silenced– maybe in the context of her life she is, but she still has plenty of thoughts and she is sharing them with us, the readers, as well as other women like Ofglen and Moira. The girl on the cover isn't even looking at us, or anything. Maybe this is just piddling irritation, but it bugged me.
ReplyDeleteIf you type "Handmaid's Tale" into google and then filter for images, you'll see this images shows up several times and so I (rather quickly and without much thought) selected it. Like an English student, you're reading a bit too deeply into some of my more arbitrary choices. I applaud your objection but I also wouldn't give my image selections too much thought.
