Work for the Week of March 3rd - Freshmen



Monday March 3rd
Minutes: Andrew Z., Lucy
Reading HW: "My Boyfriend Came Back From the War"
HW: Is this a poem?  What conventions does this piece seem to break?  To what effect?  What observations can you make about this piece?

E.C., Create a shape poem based upon an animal.  Print and bring in for Monday.

Tuesday March 4th
Minutes: Jannat, Leo
Reading HW: Visit Poetry Out Loud.   Pick a poem and then listen to it.  Then, find the poem online and read it.  Finally, listen to the poem as you are reading it.  *Don't pick a poem longer than two minutes
HW: Print your poem and bring in to class.  How are each of these experiences different?  Is poetry meant to be read aloud or to one's self?  What changes occur when we "read" a poem in a different fashion?

Wednesday March 5th

Reading HW: N/A
HW: Select a poetic device.  Explain how this poetic device works and how it contributes to a literary piece.  Give an example of how this device works.

Thursday March 6th
Minutes: Larissa, Arnab
Reading HW: Read "Definition" by Black Star.  I want you to read the piece out loud as well as quietly.
HW: Identify 5 examples of alliteration, 10 examples of assonance, and 10 examples of rhyme in "Definition".

Friday March 7th

Reading HW: Read Sonnet 18.
HW: N/A

Monday March 10th
Minutes: Rozi, Daniel
Reading HW: "America" by Allen Ginsberg, "Do Not Go Gentle Into That Goodnight by Dylan Thomas, "Touched by an Angel" by Maya Angelou,  "O Captain!  My Captain!" by Walt Whitman
HW: Print out your poem and analyze the choices the author makes by annotating the poem.  The poem you select will be turned into a paper that will be due in a week.
