  1. Ok honestly no, don't read the comments on the Sarah Silverman article. In case you are unfamiliar with Gawker comments, they tend to be somewhat irrelevant and obnoxious, since mostly it's the loudest people who feel like they just HAVE to share their thoughts and who haven't bothered to think about how their concerns are already addressed in the article who comment, and also the people who are just spitting out some knee-jerk reaction to the headline because they didn't actually read the article (those two categories overlap a lot too). But in case you're still curious, I read the comments on the article when it first came out, and they fall into one or more of three categories:

    1. People claiming that the "rape joke" debate is irrelevant because Sarah Silverman isn't funny regardless, or people just generally stating that they hate Sarah Silverman

    2. Misogynist trolls making snarky comments about Jezebel, Gawker's female-oriented sister site, because OMG IT'S AN ARTICLE ABOUT A WOMAN!!!!!!11!

    3. People making (universally gross) comments on Sarah Silverman's appearance

There is hardly any productive debate on the comedic value of rape jokes in these comments. Even when someone starts a discussion to that effect, it rapidly devolves into irrelevant snark and trolls vying for attention.

  2. Frankly, I'm surprised that you didn't ask us to read Lindy West's piece, which the CNN article is basically about. I'll link to it here: http://jezebel.com/5925186/how-to-make-a-rape-joke

  5. I saw this link on facebook:
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/12/03/disabled-mannequins-video_n_4379586.html?utm_hp_ref=fb&src=sp&comm_ref=false

and I thought it really relates to what we've been talking about in class recently about "what we don't see on tv". If you go down Fifth Ave or something, you can't help but see these extremely misrepresenting mannequins that show us unrealistic body proportions. Just like what Lean Bonnema said about how she stopped making jokes about her looks because she doesn't want to feed women's perception that to be beautiful, you have to look like Megan Fox, I think this link is a good way to start introducing society to something they don't usually see or something they don't want to see, which is disabled and deformed people who are people as well.
