Work for the Week of May 28th - Sophomores

Reading HW: "Leda and the Swan" by William Butler Yeats
HW:

Wednesday May 29th
Reading HW: "Counterparts" by James Joyce
HW: Please compare Joyce's story to Theodore Roethke's "My Papa's Waltz".  Is the father character a sympathetic figure or an evil figure?  Please explain in at least eight sentences.

Thursday May 30th
Reading HW: "What I Heard at the Discount Department Store" by David Budbill (2/5 down the page) and
Eating Alone by Li-Young Lee
HW: Analyze how each poet discusses parenthood.  Consider the perspective of the narration (is it 1st or 3rd).  How does these poems relate to the duality of "My Papa's Waltz?  Six sentence minimum.

Friday May 31st
Reading HW: "The Horses" by Edwin Muir, "A Song On The End Of The World" by Czeslaw Milosz
HW: What is the common theme that links these two works?  How does each author present the apocalypse?  Why might these writers conceive the end of the world?  Which poem appeals to you more?  Try to consider Frost's "Fire and Ice" in discussing your appeal.

Monday June 3rd
Reading HW: "Dawn" and "Adam" by Federico Garcia Lorca
HW: How does Lorca employ imagery in his works?  What common theme can you find between these two works?
