E.C Sophomores - Phrenology + Criminology = Neurocriminology?
As I sat in the lobby of a Medford, MA Hyatt Inn to eat my complementary breakfast, I noted a stack of Wall Street Journals laying upon the concierge's desk. After discovering that I did not in fact have to pay two whole dollars for the Saturday edition, I gleefully snatched a paper and returned to my mediocre cup of coffee. Much to my surprise I found the following article which I am asking you to read and discuss for our most recent extra credit assignment.
Questions to Consider:
-Are genetics somehow connected to crime? Is it possible for one to be born a criminal ("Bad to the Bone" as George Thorogood once sang)?
-How do liberals and conservatives differ when considering the possibilities of a "criminal" gene?
-What evidence appears to support this curious theory?
-What appears to affect/catalyze one's potential criminality after birth/during childhood?
-Is Mr. Page a victim of his own DNA? His poor upbringing? Or is he solely responsible for his crime?
-Is it possible to rehabilitate or treat those afflicted with particular neurological disorders that lead to crime?
After considering these questions, please apply your conclusions to Raskolnikov. Where does he fit in this discussion?
Feel free to watch the website's video and follow the WSJ commenters for potential discussion points. Ask questions of your peers, incorporate additional sources, and engage in a fascinating conversation about the human mind.

E.C. Freshmen - Body Image in American Culture
Today, we discussed the nature of Frank Bruni's sense of self-worth and his low self-esteem. We concluded that because society often stereotypes the overweight, those who do not fit the ideal body form may not view themselves positively. We are often influenced by the perception of others and if others perceive us to be of little value, how soon until we embrace these ideas?
I'd like you read the following article about a photography project by HALEY MORRIS-CAFIERO and analyze her work in an attempt to understand our culture's obsession with physical appearance. What is the value in the photography project? What does she mean by "reverse gaze"?

E.C. - Freshmen - Is Obesity the Government's Problem?
As we read Born Round, we find ourselves faced with a debate on obesity in American. As time progresses, our collective health as a nation diminishes with waistlines increasing and scales' limits being tested. The questions we must then ask is "who is responsible"? How did this massive change come about? Is it a reflection of a lack of consumer responsibility? Should food companies go to greater lengths to ensure the safety of their customers? Is it the government's responsibility to regulate companies and habits to promote healthy eating? Where does the responsibility lie?
I'd like you to continue listening to the podcast we explored in class and engage in ANY of these discussions in the comments section of this post. Feel free to introduce new evidence, ask questions of your peers, and provide necessary insight into this debate!

E.C. Sophomores - Minority Report
Today, we discussed the spectrum between thought and action. Where does one cross into the other?
After listening to the first section of Radiolab's "Bad Show", we found that in a particular study that out of 5,000 polled individuals, 91 percent of men and 84 percent of women have had homicidal thoughts. But when do these thoughts yield homicidal actions? When do thoughts become actions?
I'd like you to read Minority Report by Philip K. Dick and discuss the story's perception of thought/action. Feel free to discuss Raskolnikov or any other related topic to further our understanding of the fine line between thought and action.
