Sophomores - Work for the Week of Sept. 10th

Due Monday September 10th
Reading HW: None
HW: Please answer the following question: "What is a myth"?  This will be discussed in class.  No written work is expected.

Copies of Classical Mythology will be distributed today.

Due Tuesday September 11th
Reading: 1-13
HW: Which explanation of myth best matches your own?  I would like you to focus upon three ideas in this reading that strike your interest.  Please write down the page number and idea that will help us understand the importance of myths and explain why you selected this idea.

Due Wednesday September 12th
Reading: None.
HW: Visit this PDF that presents a variety of archetypes.  Then, try to identify two movies that are rich with archetypes.  Write down the two films and try to show anywhere from 6-10 archetypes in that film.  (Look for movies that have some sort of quest or journey, or follow a hero's story).  I don't require full sentences, just identification of the archetypes.

Due Thursday September 13th
Reading: 43-52
HW: Your reading includes the Greek creation myth.  Please research another culture's creation myth.  You are free to explore any culture you so choose.  Here is a wonderful list of a variety of creations myths.  Please do not simply read the Wikipedia page/web page you find.  Paraphrase the creation myth and find common archetypes.

Due Friday September 14th
Reading: 52-67
HW: Take notes on your reading.
Remember, no school Monday and Tuesday for the Jewish New Year.

Due Wednesday September 19th
Reading: Hestia (85-86), Zeus and Hera (90-92), Poseiden (121, 126-128), Hades (324-327)
HW: Please take notes on your reading as per class standards.  I will be checking your notes on Wednesday.

  1. Hi Mr. Ferencz! Do we have to bring our Classical Mythology books to class everyday?

  2. Lol, I clicked on the image to see if it was a playable game.

  3. This is going to make me feel old, but The Battle of Olympus was a nintendo game. The image was an attempt to portray, as we will in class this week and the next, the many modern adaptation of mythology. These myths, even trivialized in video games (I'm looking at you God of War), continue to rear their heads in the 21st century.

  4. Just making sure we do not have to do tonight's reading?

  5. No reading. I edited the page, thanks for the reminder.

  6. For the assignments, do the archetypes have to be exactly as they say. I.E. for the one about supernatural intervention, does it have to be gods? Could the people intervening be aliens or meta-humans or something?

  7. No, the archetypes do not have to be exactly as they are stated in the pdf. They should have some relation however. Be liberal in your choices. But be resolute.

  9. Hi Mr. Ferencz,
For tonight's HW, I'm not entirely sure what you're talking about when you wrote about a model we should use for our notes. I'm sorry if this means I wasn't paying attention in class (if it means anything, I thought I was) but I don't really recall any models unless you mean the way we wrote the archetypes on the board. Please enlighten me!

    -Slightly dazed,
    Amy

  10. Mr. Ferencz, for tonight's homework we are supposed to use a model or something? I don't think that I got it in class, unless it was on the board and I didn't know about it. Or were we supposed to get a handout in class? I'm a bit confused here. -Tim

  11. I'm sorry, the homework did not match our class assignment. Just do the reading. Nothing more. Sorry about the inconsistencies.

  12. So should we still take notes on what we read tonight? Because you still put down to take notes, but you commented to just do the reading. I'm sorry for not understanding too well and being a little bit slow. -Tim
