I'd like you to explore the world of female comedians via the internets. Explore different comedians and report back to us with a clip of stand up/sketch/whatever that you enjoy. Set up the clip with a bit of explanation as to what kind of style of comedian we'll be viewing.
Please refrain from selecting a well-known comedian. Find someone you've never heard of before.
There's a youtube channel called ChickComedy that upload clips of female comedians that are pretty great. Jennifer Kober is hilarious in this particular skit called "Skinny Bitches" and the continuation which is called "Hard to Kidnap". There is only a minimal amount of cursing involved and the humor isn't particularly crude. Check out the entire channel if you've got the time because the humor there isn't horrifically crass, which I like.

ReplyDeleteJessica Antonucci is a young female comedian. It was probably because her jokes were so self-deprecating that they were funny. I thought her funniest jokes were her opening ones, around 0:18.

ReplyDeleteMaria Bamford is a female comedian that has weird sense of humor but is funny nonetheless. I like this clip because it allows a homely setting to the kinds of jokes that she tells.

ReplyDeleteLisa Lampanelli has a knack of including everyone in the audience. She is extremely funny and insults everyone equally. She just tells the jokes and allows the audience to react.
Kate Micucci and Riki Lindhome, also known as "Garfunkel and Oates", are a musical comedy duo. They sing (in harmony) about random topics, but my favorites are the ones making fun of social / political topics. Most of their songs appeal to a young adult audience.

ReplyDeleteAnjelah Johnson tells jokes about everyday things that happen in her life. Her jokes are relatable to others, as you can tell by the comments on the video.
Aparna Nancherla is hilarious. She gets into tricky topics like race and gender, but twists them. My favorite part of this video is when she assures the audience that she isn't so innocent, she's drunk orange juice after brushing her teeth, she knows what its all about.
ReplyDeleteHer stand-up on Conan!

Danielle Stewart tells a lot of jokes about her unconventional childhood and her "hippie mother". However she also makes her humor relatable, as seen in this segment about her wish to get a tattoo at 18. Anyone who ever did something foolish that they regretted when they were older could find this amusing.

Rachel Feinstein tells jokes that can be related to people in general which provides a witty sense of humor to us. However, she changes her style in the middle of her act into a more racist and crude sense of humor which shows how she isn't afraid to use both witty humor and crass humor to entertain people.

ReplyDeleteMichele Balan tells jokes about everyday things. Her jokes are funny because they're relatable and unexpected.

Sarah Millican is an English comedian who once performed at the Apollo. She tells jokes about her life, ranging from her boyfriend to finding a flat. Her humor is somewhat crude, since she references to sex and "lady parts." I find it incredibly funny, especially since she makes her insecurity about her body image sound hilarious. However, she is British, so she occasionally uses British slang in her jokes.

Anna Akana is a youtuber who uses her humor/wittiness to talk about issues in society that people usually feel uncomfortable discussing. She is crazy and honest and she is not afraid of showing her weird side.

In this video, she uses her humor to bring up the touchy subjects of bullying and suicide.

ReplyDeleteIliza Shlesinger tells jokes about how the female sex (and especially herself) act crazy during relationships. Her jokes are obviously exaggerated but she touches on ideas that many of us can relate to.

ReplyDeleteRachel Bloom is a comedian who is famous on Youtube. Cosmopolitan magazine called her a comic to watch in 2014. She is well known for combining her edgy sense of humor and her musical talent to make her videos. In this sketch, Bloom performs a parody of the song "Santa Baby" called "Chanukah Honey", which shows how, "Jewish girls hit on Jewish guys." I chose this particular sketch because some of her other videos might not be allowed to be shown in school ("Fuck Me, Ray Bradbury", "Pictures of Your Dick", etc.).
Emily Heller has a series of sketches called The Future where she pretends to be a psychic. However, I think her stand-ups are better than "The Future". Her jokes are more subtle than direct and aggressive.

Shelby Fero:

Shelby Fero is only 20, and she's a relatively new comedian. She mostly does comedy based on her personal experiences. She delves a lot into sex and a bit on religion. She is really open to several topics that would otherwise be hard to talk about such as rape, sex, and even the body. She credits her parents for this openness, and relies on that to help her with her comedy.
Amy Sedaris is an author, actress, and comedian who's starred in a number of movies, television shows, late night talk shows, and Comedy Central shows, including her best-known role as Jerri Blank in"Strangers With Candy." She's a bit less well-known than her brother David Sedaris, the author, but she's made quite a name for herself in the industry.

ReplyDeleteThis is Katie Rich and in this clip she does a short stand up comedy on how people don't always mean the same things to each other. She talks about relationships between lovers, friends, family, people and the starbucks barista, etc. She also engages the audience in her stand up.

ReplyDeleteShe talks about her experience at the nail salon and adopts an Asian accent while telling her story.

ReplyDeletePhyllis Diller standup from 1965 in which she talks about her appearance in a lighthearted and self deprecating way. She is comedic in the way she describes the ridiculousness of the methods she takes to try to prepare herself and look good for the audience.

ReplyDeleteLoni Love is a comedian who often talks about relationships, current events and American politics. In this clip, she talks about being the Barack Obama of fat people and how ridiculous she thinks vegetarian barbecues are. She's very engaging and very expressive in her standup.
